Although he was not the first to introduce the Tulip in Holland, Carolus Clusius, the first director of the Hortus from 1594 to his death on 1609, is largely credited with the growing of the first Tulips in Holland. He took a few bulbs with him when he arrived from Vienna where he was responsible for the garden of Maximillian II, and started growing them in the Hortus in Leyden.
