The Hortus botanicus Leiden is a popular place for photo and film shoots. The following guidelines apply to the organisation of these shoots.

Public Relations

It is possible to film and take photographs in the Hortus, for example as part of a TV programme, documentary, newspaper or other kind of medium, free of charge. A number of conditions apply, namely that the Hortus plays a clear role in the subject of the photo or film and that the garden is not just used as a background. It is also possible to interview a staff member about the collection, history, etc. Please contact the communication department of the Hortus at

Commercial Photo/Film Shoot 

Does the Hortus not play a clear role in your photo or film? Or do you want to use the Hortus as a backdrop for photo or film shoots with commercial purposes, such as a branding or fashion shoot? In that case, you must book the shoot in advance with the Public Affairs Department via Costs: €1000.

  • Unannounced photo or film shoots will be refused or charged for afterwards. Prices are including make-up/dressing and guidance by location manager and excluding catering. Photo/film shoots are only possible on weekdays and not in the weekend (summer: daily from 10.00-18.00 and winter: tuesday to Sunday from 10.00-16.00).
  • Please pay attention to the following rules.

Bridal shoot

The Hortus is a popular place to get married or have bridal photo shoots. If you'd like to take wedding pictures in the garden or glasshouses, please inform us beforehand of your arrival via or by telephone on 071 5275144. Personnel instructions must be followed at all times. Please note the following rules:

Costs: entrance fee per person (free entrance with Museum Card).
Time: within opening hours (summer: Mon to Fri from 09.00-18.00 and winter: Tue to Fri from 09.00-16.00). 

Rules during photo/film shoots

  • It is forbidden to step outside the paths in the glasshouses or gardens. Setting up lights or tripods is also not allowed in between the plants. Even in places where nothing seems to be growing, there may be something underground.
  • The Hortus is open to visitors as a museum; they must not be hindered by the film/photo shoots. Please bear in mind that the glasshouses can be cramped.
  • Personnel instructions must be followed at all times
  • In case of publication, please mention Hortus botanicus Leiden
  • Photoshoots can only take place within the opening hours of the Hortus, (summer: daily between 10 am - 6 pm and winter: Tuesday-Sunday between 10 am - 4 pm).
